In the sport of grappling, also known as no-gi jiu jitsu, there are many exciting competition rule sets. For grappling tournaments organized by WWB, we use the United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, with a few modifications designed to promote safety and and inclusion of grapplers of all experience levels.

Modifications to UWW Rules
1. No points for close calls. Points will be awarded for positions and takedowns only.
2. No extra point for amplitude takedowns. We won’t DQ anyone for doing one, but we also don’t want to incentivize them.
3. Exiting the mat while in a submission will lead to a point for the attacker, per the UWW rules. Unlike in the UWW rules, the attacker will not be declared winner by submission even if it appears that the defender was intentionally exiting the mat. Instead, the defender will be issued a caution.
4. Allowable moves will follow the IBJJF list of allowed moves by experience level. In the event that athletes compete across skill levels, the lower skill level rules apply.
-
Beginner (white belt or < 2 years of wrestling/grappling)
-
Intermediate (blue/purple belt or 2-5 years of wrestling/grappling)
-
Advanced (brown/black belt or 5+ years of grappling training)
-
Exception: Heel hooks are not allowed, per UWW rules.
-
5. Adaptations to allow pulling guard by experience level:
-
Beginner: Athletes may pull guard at any time without sacrificing points if the athlete pulling guard has contact with their opponent.
-
Intermediate: Athletes may pull guard without sacrificing points if the athlete pulling guard has contact with their opponent, but only after the first minute.
-
Advanced: No modification of UWW rules–pulling guard always grants the opponent 2 takedown points.
